Cub Camp 2023
The 18th Purley Cubs spent 3 nights away at Frylands for their summer camp.
In total, we had 24 Cubs, 2 young leaders (Scouts) and a core team team of 8 Scouters plus various parents helping out over the weekend.
We proved more than a match for the wet weather on the Saturday and after the Cubs had put up their tents they made camp flags, followed by a team exercise of barrel karts construction. This was followed by some First Aid Level 3 activities including CPR, which is required to earn this badge. Then, following a fantastic spaghetti bolognaise, the Cubs bedded down for the night, which for many of the younger cubs was their first night away from home, on camp and under canvas.
Sunday proved to bear much better weather, so we managed to get 99% of the gear completely dried out. The Cubs did some archery and air rifle shooting in the morning followed by a trip to the swimming pool at Addington in the afternoon and further games before a BBQ. In the evening, a usual camp fire ensued with much hearty singing lead by Rod, and marshmallows on the fire.
Monday bought further showers in the morning but this didn’t dampen the enthusiastic assault course and pipes which the Cubs made up some games for. As one of the Cubs had a birthday, cake was also enjoyed along with a trip to the providore. After lunch cubs attacked the climbing wall, with many making it to the top up the variously graded climbs.
Back at camp we completed some Morse Code exercises and then enjoyed a sausage casserole and pudding. This was once again followed by some more hearty singing around the campfire.
Tuesday morning saw us packing up camp and the Cubs getting stuck into this. We managed to get the tents more or less dry on the day, but they were then dried out fully back at HQ afterwards.
